The UPSC elaborately known as the UNION PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION is the agency responsible for the premier central recruits of India. The UPSC is the commission that organizes the very popular nationwide competitive examination, Civil Services Examination popularly known as UPSC Examination.
This examination is held in three stages; the first is widely known as the Civil Service Aptitude Test or CSAT, it is a preliminary examination with two objective type papers.
( General Studies paper-1 and General Studies paper The next stage is the main examination consisting of nine papers of essay type and the last stage is the personality check through an interview. After clearing all these stages the aspirant is then recruited as a Civil Servant for the Government of India. These recruits are posted as Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), an Indian Police Service (IPS).

The UPSC Examination has been inspired by the civil service tests that were conducted by ancient Indian empires like the Mauryan Empire and the Mughal empire. The Imperial Civil Services Tests that were held during the British Era were also looked upon when creating this competitive examination.
The CSE is considered to be the most difficult competitive examination and it is that it takes the preparation of two long years — one year before the prelims and one year from the prelims to the interview. So, it is quite hard work.
On average, 900,000 to 1,000,000 is the number of candidates applying every year and the number of candidates sitting in the preliminary examination is approximately 550,000.
Stage I: The Preliminary examination is held in June every year and the results are declared in the month of August.
Stage II: The Mains
The examination is held in October and the results are declared come out in the month of January of next year.
The Personality Test / Interview is held in the month of March and the results are announced in May.
The TRAINING PROGRAM for the selected students starts from the September following.
Since this examination is of utter importance and popularity the aspirants are very passionate about clearing it and thus, to help them give a chance the Union Public Service Commission provides a number of attempts for each applying category.

GENERAL CANDIDATES — 6
OBC CANDIDATES — 9
SC/ST CANDIDATES — Unlimited attempts till 37 years of age.
